Winner of The Rock’s Street Star competition, Sammy Bland has been making the most of her competition prize by singing her heart out in The Met theatre’s brand new Edwin Street Recording Studio.
The recording studio has been designed to enable young musicians of Bury to enhance their talent through practising in a professional recording facility. The Rock, Bury Council, The Big Give and Manchester’s School of Sound Recording assisted in the development of the project, which transformed the disused building at the back of The Met Theatre into a high specification recording studio for use by the local community and professional musicians.
Songstress Sammy won The Rock’s Street Star’s competition earlier this year, following a three-month audition process, where she went up against an extremely high level of local talent and was voted the winner by The Rock’s Facebook fans. During her time in the recording studio, Sammy worked on and went on to record her very own version of Queen’s epic song, ‘Somebody to Love’.
Bolton-born Sammy, who claims her greatest inspiration is rock icon Freddie Mercury, said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in The Met’s new recording studio. It has given me the opportunity to practise doing what I love – singing! Next on my list is to study musical theatre at Pendleton College in Salford and I cannot wait!”
David Agnew, director of The Met, commented: “We have worked closely with Youth Services to bring this project to life which will allow young people of Bury to access some of the finest equipment and training in the region.”
Nikki Kitchen, marketing manager for The Rock, added: “We have developed a close partnership with The Met Theatre since opening and have worked collaboratively on a range of community projects over the past year. Sammy is certainly a worthy winner and we hope that the prize of studio time provides a platform for her to develop her talent further.”
