Top Gear Driving School warn us of changes in the law and driving entitlements!

I am the owner of Top Gear driving school and a registered driver instructor. I would like to bring to your attention the changes in the law and driving licence entitlements as of January 1997.

If you passed your driving test after January 1997 you must also pass a practical category B+E test to tow a trailer, caravan, horsebox and boat that exceeds 750kg on a vehicle weighing 3.5 tonnes.

With a normal B licence you are allowed to tow a trailer up to 750kg, allowing a combined weight of up to 4.25 tonnes or a trailer over 750kg  provided the maximum authorised mass of the trailer does not exceed the unladed weight of the towing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

It is shocking that the DSA has failed to bring these rules to the attention of the general public. This situation could affect families going on holiday with camping equipment getting pulled over for a routine check then finding out they are illegal.

This would lead to the discontinuation of the journey, being reported for driving without the correct licence which in turn invalidates insurance policies. Drivers could even be faced with a driving ban!
