To practically everyone in the world, dust is as familiar as the air we breathe. No matter where you live or work, you will see and breathe dust on a daily basis. But do you know what is in this most common concoction? In this article, we will run the lens over this microscopic cocktail and analyse the best ways to deal with it to keep it out of your lungs. With people in developed countries spending 90% of their time indoors, this is a substance that it important to know about.
So, what is dust? The short answer is it is a build up of microscopic particles that cling to each other and form the substance that we can see. The more detailed answer depends on where that dust is formed and collects together. A large part of dust everywhere is made up of dust mites, tiny creatures that feed on the organic material that is present in dust. That organic material is made of mainly human and animal skin flakes and hair. This micro eco system makes up a large part of dust worldwide, but there are a couple more components that complete the finished product that we all know so well.
One of these components is particles of local geology and man-made product. In one area that is particularly rich in quartz you will find that this in the dust of the local area, another rich in iron would find the same thing occurs. As for artificial components, this could come from an array of places, including local places of manufacturing and production, in addition to products that we keep in doors. For instance, there are small particulates within the paint on our walls and the furniture that we buy. In this way, there have even been studies that have discovered now banned substances in the dust that we breathe. It is contentious whether or not these exist in a high enough concentration to have an effect on human health. There are, however, studies that have found that this may be the case, especially for children.
The last part to talk about is something called “cosmic dust” this is matter formed from the death of large stars in the cosmos that has over a period of billions of years found its way to earth and constantly rains down through our atmosphere and finds its way into our dust.
Now that we know what our dust is made from, we can see that there are some not too welcome guests that reside in it, that we would more likely than not, be wanting to evict from our premises. The fact is, dust and the potentially harmful content that it can contain, does not actually do the most harm within the air that we breathe; the concentrations of the harmful substances are much lower. The main way that we ingest it, is through the film that it forms when it lands on our food and drink. Either way, the main objective is to have as little build up of it in the air as possible, to reduce the risks involved. That is, of course, on top of the way that it looks and the fact that nobody wants to invite people into a dusty, unloved room.
With that being said, here are a few tips so that you can minimise the dusty build up in your indoor environment.
