We are currently running a full gritting service to help keep traffic flowing through the borough, main arterial routes and bus routes are being treated. In total 214km or 133 miles of highway is gritted in a full round.
Over the weekend gritting teams went out and completed the following:
Friday 17 December – gritting teams were out from 3pm until 9am on Saturday morning and completed two full grit runs. Snow Ploughs were fitted to the gritters at 22:00
Saturday 18 December – gritting teams went out from 9am until 4pm when the standby crew were called back in. This team gritted from 5pm until 1am on Sunday morning.
Sunday 5 December – gritting teams went out from midday until 9pm.
Monday: As well as the gritting teams 2 additional vehicles are out on the borough’s main roads snow ploughing.
Over the weekend the gritting teams used approximately 250 tonnes of grit salt to help keep main roads open and 11 full operational grits were completed. Also to combat the freezing temperatures we made sure that more grit was spread as gritters were placed on a higher setting

Grit Boxes
The council has approximately 300 grit bins across the borough. These are currently being re-stocked by street cleansing teams. Council workers are also out and about around the borough gritting pavements and footpaths.
We are focusing on the south of the borough in order to try and help clear the way for refuse vehicles to collect waste and recycling tomorrow (Tuesday 22 December).
Refuse Collections:
Bury Council's rubbish and recycling collection crews do not have any scheduled work today and work will resume tomorrow, weather permitting.
Despite the bad weather, the teams are doing their utmost to complete all their rounds - and residents are urged to put out their bins and bags as normal on their usual collection day. It would greatly assist refuse collections if residents could take bins to the end of their street so that crews can access the bins from the gritted main roads.
However, if due to the bad weather any bins or bags are missed by the collection teams residents should return them to their property and put them out again on the next scheduled collection day for the container that has been missed.
Any extra rubbish and recycling can be taken to any of the three household waste recycling centres - at Every Street in Bury, Cemetery Road in Radcliffe and Clifton Road in Prestwich.
