Work to create a new system of pedestrian and cycle crossings in the heart of Radcliffe starts on Monday (2 Oct).
The project, at the junctions of Blackburn Street and Pilkington Way, aims to make it easier for walkers and cyclists to get into the town centre or to get through Radcliffe from the Outwood Trail to the canal. A dedicated cycle crossing, linking Derbyshire Road and School Street, would offer an alternative route for people using National Cycle Route 6 instead of having to negotiate the busy junction at Dale Street.
While common on the Continent, the cycle crossing will be only the second one of its type to be built in Greater Manchester.
The £150,000 project is being funded by the Cycle City Ambition Grant, obtained from the Government by Transport for Greater Manchester.
The work is expected to last eight weeks, and will take place Monday to Friday during daytime off-peak hours (9.30am to 3pm) in order to minimise disruption. During this time, there will be single lane traffic on Pilkington Way at this junction.
Access will be maintained to Blackburn Street during the majority of the works. However at the end of the works, Blackburn Street will have to
be closed to traffic for short durations while carriageway surfacing is undertaken, and signed diversions in place.
Inevitably when undertaking a scheme of this nature some disruption is unavoidable; however Bury Council will endeavour to keep this to a minimum.
