Young people in the Springs area of Bury took the lead in carrying out a community clean-up.
Together they collected around 30 bags of rubbish as part of a project to educate youngsters about waste, recycling and putting the right stuff in the right bin.
They were supported in their litter pick by theNew Springs Community Project Group (NSCPG), Bury Council, and staff from McDonald’s branches on The Rock and Woodfields.
Rachael Bamber, community development worker for the NSCPG, said: “It has been a really positive experience to team up with the council’s waste management team.
“Luke Solczak, waste awareness and enforcement officer, visited our Out of School Kids Club to deliver an educational talk to the children which they really enjoyed regarding recycling. Luke also put us in touch with McDonald’s who arranged for some of their staff to help with the annual estate clean-up over the Easter holidays with the children, with skips provided by Springs TMC and Contour Homes. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported this project.”
Janine Bowling, business manager at McDonald’s, said: “It was great to help our local community with the Springs clean-up. Our staff enjoyed helping out with this worthwhile cause.”
The group is planning to carry out future litter picks, and would like to hear from local businesses who can sponsor skips.
The council also provides help to those who take the Street Care Pledge to help make Bury a safer, cleaner, greener borough. For details, go to http://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=11298
