Organisers of an alternative to the annual Strawberry Fair have said they expect around 2,000 to turn out in Cambridge and enjoy a day in the sun with families on Saturday.
The event had initially been in jeopardy after a group named the 'Cambridge Anarchists' issued a message online, outlining that local Police and authorities could expect trouble after the official Strawberry Fair was refused a license to go ahead.
However, Cinnamon Francis-Burnett, organiser of the ‘Happy Fun Day’ planned in place of the Strawberry Fair on Saturday, dismissed these comments and explained that she expects the crowd to mainly be made up of families enjoying barbecues and playing games in the sun.
Whilst the official Strawberry Fair will not go ahead this weekend as usual, Police, Cambridge Council and organisers of the event have been holding talks that could see the Fair return in 2011.
The Council commented that whilst there would not be any extra toilets or stewards made available for Saturday, Police presence within Cambridge would be stepped up to accommodate a potential influx of visitors and minimise anti-social behaviour within the local area.
