Cambridge residents were cast in a real life scene from a monster movie at the weekend when a swarm of over 1,000 bees descended on the Grand Arcade in the City Centre.
Shoppers in the Grand Arcade reported thousands of bees buzzing around the main entrance on Saturday lunchtime, with some people forced to flee into local stores after they massed on a nearby bus stop.
One local shop worker remarked: "People were panicking and trying to swat them away. We had to close our doors."
No reason has been found as to why the bees amassed in this manner, but insect experts have outlined it could be attributed to the increase in temperature during the run up to Summer or the disturbance of a local hive.
