Following weeks of preparation and campaigning by politicians, election day has finally arrived as polling stations across Cambridge opened for voting at 7am.
Hundreds of thousands of people across the region are expected to head to their local polling station today to vote in both the national and local council elections.
42 polling stations across Cambridge opened at 7am and will remain open until 10pm this evening. The city council has also issued 12, 683 postal votes and distributed 79,000 ballot papers to polling stations.
Staff at the city council will be counting the voting papers overnight, with a result expected at around 4am on Friday morning.
