Thrill seeking 'tombstoners' who jump from the Silver Street Bridge in Cambridge into the river below could face police action in the future as an investigation is launched into the dangers of the popular tradition.
Jumping from the 10ft bridge into the River Cam, the 'tombstoners' have been deemed a risk to public and personal safety by local authorities after a woman who jumped from the bridge last year landed on a broken punt pole beneath the surface.
Phillipa Noon, River Manager for the River Cam commented: "There are unseen obstructions in the river that could cause serious injury.”
The Cam Conservators have launched an investigation into the dangerous activty and the police have warned local jumpers that they are breaking the law and could potentially face arrest in the future if they continue.
