Plans for a dedicated cycle lane on Gilbert Road, Cambridge will go ahead, with the existing cycle lane widened to 1.7m and parking restrictions being put in place.
The £400,000 plans, which have been designed to reduce accidents and improve cycling within the area, will see yellow lines painted within the cycle lane and on the verge preventing people from parking in the area.
The proposals have been widely challenged by local residents, who cite the loss of on-street parking as a major problem for people who live along Gilbert Road, as well as the road works and disturbance the new plans will bring about.
Cambridge transport bosses outlined that the 900 local cyclists who currently use Gilbert Road as a commuter route, have to contend with approximately 20 vehicles parked in the cycle lanes at any one time, significantly increasing the potential risk of accidents and injury.
