Local businesses along Mill Road in Cambridge have outlined fears that the recent roadworks along the road could cause permanent damage to trade within the area.
Companies around Mill Road, which is currently closed to traffic due to sewer repairs, have seen a significant downturn in customers since the roadworks began claiming the area has been turned into a 'ghost town'.
One local business owner commented: “It is very quiet – it’s like a ghost town here. We have had very little passing trade."
The works are due to remain for a further six weeks as Anglian Water carry out essential repairs to sewers beneath the road.
A spokesman for the company commented: “This work is essential and should mean that we can permanently fix the issue rather than having to come back.”
