A bid is currently underway to bring the Olympic torch to Cambridge as the London 2012 games approach.
A plan has been put forward for Cambridge to play a part in the Olympic torch relay, either being carried by a rowing eight or even by punt as it travels across 80 different countries to London.
Andy Allsopp, head of communications at Cambridgeshire Country Council outlined: “We wanted to be as creative as possible in our approach to the bid and involve all partner organisations.
“There are some fantastic ideas within the proposal we have put forward – which centre around making the most of the sporting and cultural heritage of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.”
“With Cambridge’s cycling and rowing heritage, the torch could be carried on a rowing eight on the Cam, or on a punt or cycle through the city.”
The final decision will ultimately be made by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic & Paralympic Games this Autumn.
