Retail giants go head to head in Cambridge

Expansion plans for a larger Sainsbury's in Cambridge were given the go ahead by Cambridge City Council yesterday after designs for an additional 2,845 sq metres of floorspace were approved by the planning committee.

Rejecting the advice of planning officers, the committee agreed a larger store would not have a significant adverse impact on Cambridge town centre by dragging shoppers away to the edge of town.

The new 40% larger store is seen as a direct attempt by Sainsbury's to challenge Tesco's current dominance of the Cambridge food market and will see the creation of over 100 new jobs within the area.
