I was wondering what people thought of the Cardiff Council idea mentioned last week to dim the Cardiff streetlights in a sophisticated energy efficiency scheme?
Talk of saving a million pounds a year on the streetlighting bill is probably optimistic but half of that would be worth having especially on an on-going basis.
The scheme varies the amount of light given by streetlights in different areas of the City. So areas with little or no crime at night can be turned down whilst crime-spots can remain fully illuminated.
It sounds a great idea and would have my support.
Apart from the initial investment there seems no downside plus the initial investment would be reasonably quickly re-couped. The Council should get on with this now rather than spend the next few years in consultation processes. This is where democrasy can sometimes be a ball and chain but ultimately very few political decisions are genuine "no-brainers" but this idea seems to be.
Or am I missing a vital part of the picture somewhere?
