Fire a rocket for the New Year?
23rd October 2009

Now as everybody knows it is not long until Bonfire night, Guy Fawkes night, the 5th of November - whatever the event is called these days.

The great tradition is to let off fireworks in the back graden, have a few sparklers and a bit of Ooh & Arrh fun.  Fine - great as long as eveyone is careful etc. etc.

There are also great displays to see such as Sparks in the Park  which is actually on Halloween this year ie. 31st October but I digress.

Anyway , my point.  This is a great time to buy one single rocket and store it carefully away until.....New Year's Eve.  What.  Yep - New Year's Eve.  You can if you are lucky buy a rocket in December but it much more difficult to find.

Now - just one decent rocket mind.

So what am I on about.  I want to start a new Cardiff tradition.  Let me explain.

Many years ago, 1990 I think - I spent New Year's Eve in Hamburg, Germany with friends. Over there it is called Slyvester with all sorts of strange traditions with chimney sweeps and an old English comedy that is shown on television every year with a drunken dinner party...BUT the magnificent part of the event is that from Midnight for about four hours there was a magnificent firework display across the city? It was a real wow.  Now, the key thing is that the tradition is that the people of Hamburg each buy a single rocket and release it after Midnight.  Simple - do the maths with thousands of rockets going up at different times you have an amazing free display for everyone to enjoy.

So. my cunning plan - everyone should buy one rocket and let it off between midnight and 1am (let's start small) on this New year's Eve in Cardiff and create a fantastic new traditon of an amzing free firework diplay that celebrates the New Year rather than watching the New Year crawl in on the telly or just being in a drunken mess in town..

Also, it is cheap for eveyone and everyone benefits.  Also, in the fullness of time - charities could sell the rockets and we could raise money by lighting up the New Year for xx charity.

What do you think?  Does this idea have legs - will this rocket idea fly?

Please let me know if you think this is a good idea and we can then start to see if we can really make it Happen.

Please post your comments and thoughts.
