Wow - yesterday the snow arrived in Cardiff for real. That's good - it only seems fair when everywhere else in the country seems to have had some.
It has been very cold but Cardiff has never been prone to snow due to our proximity to the coast and being virtually at sea level.
It does get cold though as shown before and after Christmas. This year I went to my parents village in Essex to collect them for Christmas. It was one of the days they shut both bridges! It took me 3 hours to get to Chepstow - then I had to turn back because my heater packed up. Nightmare.
It was not the cold in the car but the fact that the window mists up and you have to keep the window open to clear the window brrr...luckily I rang John Enticott a briliant mobile mechanic on our site and he recommended for speed that I pop to Continental Cars who are also on our site under Garage Services
Matt was brilliant and he changed the fuse and I was off again - seven hours later I was at my parents- then with a 7 hour trip to bring them back the next day - Christmas was upon us.
But no snow until yesterday and even then it was only an inch and a half. The worst snow conditions in Cardiff I can remember was January 1982. It was snow for days and even the buses couldn't get up Penylan Hill!! The roof of the Pavilion at Sophia Gardens collapsed under the weight of snow (the venue where the council car park is now not the cricket pavilion!) but that may have been a different year the memory plays tricks.
So snow is good although Cardiff grounds to a halt for work as so many commute in from more snow dominated locations such as the valleys. The other modern hazard is the slopes on housing estates which are really treacherous!!
Anyway, as I walked around the frozen lake yesterday it was great to see so many young people enjoying the fresh snow - that really is what it is all about....for a day!
