We Are Art

An exhibition of GCSE, AS and A2 art, craft, design and photography works at Tullie House Special Exhibitions Gallery

16 July – 28 September 2010

Carlisle’s brightest artistic talents on display at Tullie House

Following the success of First Perspective in 2008, Tullie House is delighted to welcome back the Carlisle Secondary Schools Art Exhibition. Re-named We Are Art by the student exhibition team, this is an exhibition designed by young people, for young people. We Are Art presents a snapshot of the diverse styles and media used by students in the creation of their GSCE, AS and A2 artworks, and reflects the quality and innovation of Secondary visual arts teaching in the Carlisle District.

The schools taking part in the exhibition are Caldew School, Richard Rose Central Academy, Richard Rose Morton Academy, Trinity School and William Howard School. Students from the schools formed an exhibition team to work with Tullie House staff and digital artist Louise Kneath to produce ideas for art work for publicity, devise interpretative content and create an accompanying programme of events for We Are Art.

From exam questions to sensational final pieces, this vibrant exhibition offers an insight into how the visual arts are taught and highlights the importance of the students’ creative processes as well as their final artworks. We Are Art explores themes including the human form, the human mind, still life and natural forms, culture and place, and colour. An image loop located in Tullie House entrance to accompany the exhibition provides the opportunity to present a more comprehensive display of students’ work. Tullie House’s brand new art website Open House will also host an online exhibition of We Are Art during August and September; this can be found at www.openart.tulliehouse.co.uk.

The local business community has joined Tullie House in giving these talented local students the recognition they deserve by supporting the production of We Are Art and by sponsoring a prize giving ceremony. Tullie House would like to thank Cumbria Supplies, FJ Display, Grafix Signs, Henshaw Framing and Art Gallery, Reeds Printers and Specialist Crafts for supporting We Are Art.

Rebecca Warren, Visual Arts Education Officer said:
"We are thrilled to run this exhibition for the second time. It is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the skills, hard work and commitment of the students in our area."

Julie Wooding, Learning & Access Manager said:
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Tullie House to work with schools to showcase the huge talent of local Secondary School art students.  These students should feel proud that Tullie House visitors will be able to enjoy their artworks displayed in a professional gallery which, hopefully, will encourage some of them to pursue their artistic talents further."
