The Four Waterfall Walk is my favourite place to go walking in Carmarthenshire. The beauty of each individual falls is so different yet as one they are magnificent. There is something mesmerising about watching water cascade over a precipice and listen to it crash on the rocks and run off down the river and in Ystradfellte the treat that awaits is very special.
If you love walking you will love the walk around Llyn Y Fan Fach, (Lake of the small Beacon Hill) a beautiful lake in the west of the Brecon beacons National Park below the peak of the Black Mountain.
The wonder of steam comes to a rally in Carmarthenshire at the end of September when you can see miniature engines, trains and traction engines in a fabulous weekend of nostalgia.
A great way to learn about nocturnal wildlife is to go on a bat walk with the experts. You can do that this autumn at the Llanelli Wetland Centre. There will be some fun activities for kids – and plenty of hot drinks for all! The event starts at 7pm on Friday, September 25th.
One of south Carmarthenshire’s most scenic gems is nestled in a beautiful estuary that inspired one of Wales’s greatest 20th century writers. Laugharne was the home for some years of Dylan Thomas and there are many references to the poet around this lovely little town, but there is much more to see here besides his legacy, not least the magnificent castle. It’s a great place for a day trip, or a longer visit.
There’s some great entertainment for families this summer on board the Gwili Railway steam trains and vintage diesels in Carmarthenshire. Enjoy a delicious cream tea on the Bronwydd Belle, a 1950s specially equipped dining train; or grab a fish and chip supper while you travel through beautiful countryside one evening.
These walks are a unique introduction to the darker side of local life that are given a magical twist by the tour guide. Not for nothing was Carmarthen considered to be the ‘Wild West’ of Wales.
Moving to a bigger site this year to extend the camping area and welcome even more visitors is the popular Festival of the Celts, which features a whole range of music and events for the family over a fab weekend at the end of July.
