Now, you’d expect staff at the National Botanic Garden of Wales to know their onions. But bananas?
Horticulturist Chrissy Harcourt admits she loves the Garden’s homegrown bananas. “They taste ever so slightly of apple,” she said. “And it does seem a strange mix – a tropical fruit amidst all this snow.”
The Musa "Cavendishii" were grown in the Garden’s Tropical House and have just ripened enough to eat. There was certainly no shortage of takers around the Garden – even the birds seemed to take a liking to them!
Chrissy said: “I’m not sure that bananas are necessarily a staple of a robin’s diet but it can’t do them any harm, can it.”
Nawr, fe fyddech chi’n disgwyl i staff Gardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol Cymru i adnabod eu winwns, ond bananas?
Mae’r Arddwraig Chrissy Harcourt yn cyfaddef ei bod yn dwlu ar fananas yr Ardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol. “Mae’n nhw’n blasu ychydig bach iawn fel afal”, meddai. “Mae’n gyfuniad rhyfedd – ffrwyth trofannol ynghanol yr eira.”
Mae’r Musa basjoo wedi bod yn tyfu yn y Tŷ Trofannol, ac meant wedi aeddfedu digon erbyn hyn i’w bwyta. Yn sicr, doedd dim prinder pobl i’w bwyta o gwmpas yr Ardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol, ac mae’r adar hyd yn oed wedi dechrau eu mwynhau!
Dywedodd Chrissy: “Dwi ddim yn credu bod banana yn rhan arferol ddeiet robin goch ond all un cegaid ddim gwneud unrhyw niwed!”
