The Kidwelly Industrial Museum Trust was set up in 1980 by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers who wished to preserve for future generations the history of the hand mill method of making tinplate. The idea was first put forward by Mr Wm.Hill Morris, the then president of the Kidwelly Civic Society.
Our first grant of £350 was received from the Prince of Wales Trust. Following this grants were received from the science museum and the British Steel Corporation. The then, Llanelli Borough Council purchased the site and the trust was granted a lease and applied for charitable status. The Kidwelly Industrial Museum was registered in October 1982 as The Kidwelly Heritage Centre and Tinplate Museum Trust (513188) with the Charities Commission. The Objects of the Trust are as follows:
“To advance the education of the Public in the historical, industrial and technical features and buildings associated with the former Kidwelly tinplate works in the County of Dyfed and the surrounding area by promoting their restoration, preservation and maintenance and establishing a Heritage Centre and Museum.”
The Trust continues to undertake projects and research and apply for funding opportunities to interpret and preserve its collection and buildings.
The Kidwelly Museum Trust are all volunteers from various backgrounds who are passionate about conserving, preserving and maintaining the tinplate works and to forward the vision of the Museum. Working with the trust, also as volunteers, are the Museum Mentor, the Volunteer Coordinator and the Honorary Curator.
