Chelmsford Council announced plans this week to press ahead with an application for city status as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, set for 2012.
Roy Whitehead, leader of the council, commented: "In view of its position as one of the largest towns in the UK, its heritage, cultural diversity and economic significance, Chelmsford should be officially recognised as a city.”
Previous attempts by Chelmsford to gain city status have been unsuccessful, but it is hoped that the promotion of the dual elements of an established local football club in Chelmsford City and the popular cathedral could push the bid through on this occasion.
