With Harvest just around the corner, many people in the community collect food for their harvest festivals, in the aim to donate food stores to those who are needy.
Vulnerable eastern Europeans are set to benefit from the generosity of people from Chelmsford after the 12th Harvest for the Hungry campaign has been launched in the town and schools, businesses, churches.
Individuals have been encouraged to take part, and the charity aims to fill thousands of boxes with non-perishable food, which will then be sent to orphanages, residential homes and mental institutions in Bulgaria by lorries.
Rev Roger Stark, of the charity, has been at Springfield Park Baptist Church, in Chelmsford, for 13 years and helped to start the campaign, in 1999 following the crisis in Kosovo.
He said: “There’s lots of support out there, 66 tonnes of food aid was sent out last year, that’s 4,000 boxes. People are very generous.”
Boxes can be collected from the Meadows Shopping Centre, in Chelmsford, until October 15. Lorries carrying the boxes will then leave on October 18.
