Chelmsford is ready to fight for city status. Will it be third time lucky?
Chelmsford's proposed bid for city status will go for council approval at the end of this month and then the bid is set to be officially launched.
The bid is for the town to be given official city status as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year.
Competition is rife and earlier this week, Southend announced rival plans to put in a bid to become the first city in Essex!
Chelmsford has unsuccessfully bid for city status twice before but it is hoped this will be third time lucky
Leader of the Council, Roy Whitehead commented 'We are the county town, have a cathedral and are the administrative centre of local government. We shall soon be having the first John Lewis in Essex... We have been unlucky in the past, but fingers crossed this time we shall be successful.”
Simon Burns MP said 'I am staggered Essex, with its large population and geographical position, does not have a city.'
With wide support, it is hoped this year's bid will see Chelmsford successfully gain the much deserved city status.
