Bad day at The White House.

It seems incredible that in August 1814 British redcoats marched to Washington and burned The White House. It's not that long ago but shows how powerful Britain was at the time. The man chiefly responsible was Rear Admiral George Cockburn later to become Sir George. He also delivered Napoleon to St Helena where he spent the rest of his life. Sir George was a young frigate captain along side Nelson who thought highly of him, he's best remembered for his attack on Washington and seeing Napoleon into exile. He lived at High Beech near Epping, but probably did his shopping in Chelmsford !!
