I have been to this restaurant twice now, once on a Saturday evening with a group of friends and another at Saturday lunchtime with family. Both times, the food and service have been excellent. The wine (we had the chianti) was very nice and reasonably priced. The clientele were also refreshingly pleasant and thankfully lacking the "TOWIE crowd" you find in places such as The Bridge Street Lounge & Grill and Riverside Inn. This end of Chelmsford needed a restaurant like this and I hope it goes from strength to strength.

This was my second visit to this new independent restaurant in the West End area of Chelmsford. On both occasions I have been very impressed with the food, service and the welcoming staff. The menu caters for all tastes and the restaurant also offers a children's menu for under 7s. We look forward to returning again to sample more culinary delights! Highly recommended.

Visited Bank Holiday evening, which was quiet. Food and service excellent. We wanted an independent local restaurant rather than a chain and this one fit the bill perfectly for us.

This restaurant really tries to be great and they almost pulled it off. But when you are passed the atmosphere, food serving and the choice of extra pepper, it stops. Been to this restaurant twice, and the food was tasteless. Potatoes on the side were the ones you buy frozen at the supermarket. First time I had the pepper steak and the second time I had the t-bone steak. If you are going to this restaurant, order something else than steaks.

My husband and I went here last night to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary - The food was tasty I had the a starter from the specials board - Gnocchi it was very light, my husband had a crab starter from the menu which was also good, we both had pasta dishes for mains which were equally good. The service is also reasonable. On the down side the place does get very busy before shows at the theatre and a little later on which made it rather noisy and the tables are rather close together - we were by the window but still the table next to us could hear everything we said and we could hear what they were saying to so I was not too happy that we could not have a private conversation! Walking through the restaurant to get to the toilet was difficult too as there is not much space between tables to walk around. Will I be going there again I dont think so I can eat elsewhere with food that is just as good and with more space around me.

Wife and I decided to give this new place a try. Food was very good service was also good my only complaint was it was cramped the tables where to close to each other making it impossible to have private conversations shame as everything else was spot on Will not go back as Olio,s does the same type of food at the same price but better service and more space.

When I read "Family run Italian restaurant" I expected an Italian family to run the restaurant. Mind you, they do not lie: it is a family run restaurant, and they do offer Italian food, but....they are not Italian, and it shows. Starting with the way the menu is written: the Italian word for starters is "Antipasti", not "Primi piatti" and "Primi piatti" are things like pasta or soup...I found a lot of the comments misleading...it is not authentic, it is not the best Italian food.
The food is OK, nothing special, but for instance no restaurant in Italy would serve their main courses with a few watery boiled carrots and broccoli. Italian vegetables are varied and can be cooked in much more interesting ways.Perhaps they would say that they are "doing what their public wants" and perhaps they are, but I see it as a compromise and an easy way out. I had some rice to go with my main (a very un Italian thing to do!!) and that was very watery too, it simply had not been drained properly. Shame. One thing I strongly agree with is that their staff is very attentive and friendly, the service very good and efficient.
So if I just wanted to go to a restaurant to have something to eat I would go back there, but if I wanted to experience proper Italian food I would not.

For us Il Palazzo has passed us by, lost amongst the deluge of bars and takeaways along Duke Street (Kebab alley); which is a real shame because we visited for the first time on Wednesday night and had a great time. The food was really tasty, well presented and well priced. The service was attentive but not OTT - it seems to be one or the other elsewhere nowadays - and although quiet when we arrived at 6pm but soon filled with a mix of couple and families out to enjoy some tasty Italian food.
Il Palazzo is no longer lost amongst the bars, takeaway pizzas and kebabs of Dukes Street; it's a delight we've discovered, make sure you do too.
