After 12 successful years of headship at Rendcomb College, Gerry Holden has been appointed to the position of Headmaster at Dover College. The Governors are pleased to announce the appointment of Roland Martin as Headmaster of Rendcomb College with effect from September 2011.

Roland will be joining us after thirteen years at Eton College, where he has enjoyed his academic, pastoral and spiritual roles as English and Drama teacher, Head of Year 11 and since 2005, a Housemaster.

It is a happy coincidence that Roland is an Old Rendcombian himself. He was a Foundation Scholar here and embraced the College’s educational philosophy of breadth and depth wholeheartedly. He took several significant roles in school plays; played the violin in the orchestra for seven years; was Head of Choir; edited The Rendcombian; was Captain of the 2nd XV rugby team and played both cricket and hockey for the College.

After Rendcomb, Roland went to the University of York to read English and Related Literature. Upon graduation, he pursued a teaching career, enabling him to indulge not only his literary enthusiasms, but also his love of the stage and sports field, directing a multitude of plays, and coaching various sports teams

Roland and his wife Kerri have two children, Jude (almost ten) and Jemima (recently six) who are as excited about the prospect of their move to Daddy’s old school and its stunning location as are their parents. Music, theatre, cinema, reading, sport and travel feature high-up on the family’s interests.

Commenting on his appointment, Roland said, “Rendcomb is a very special place and I am both honoured and excited to be asked by Mr Lane and the Governing Body to lead the School from September.  I look forward to working with the Common Room and to the prospect of literally and metaphorically coming home.”

Rupert Lane, the Chairman of Governors, commented “All at Rendcomb are delighted to be welcoming Roland back: he was very much our first-choice and we feel he is just the man to lead the school over the coming years.”
