Regency architecture is one of Cheltenham’s most famous attractions, and several of those buildings are listed. The Council are often approached by owners to give detailed advice on issues relating to their own Regency building, so a leaflet has now been produced to help answer any questions they have. The leaflet is also intended to be an information resource and provide benefit to all those who have an interest in Cheltenham’s historic environment.
Our thanks go to Jeremy Jefferies, Conservation Officer at the Council from 1974 to 1996, as the idea for the leaflet was proposed by him. Mr. Jefferies recognised there was a need for readily available information on the principles relating to Regency architecture. He also provided photographs to illustrate aspects of design.
Tracey Crews, Head of Planning, said: “We hope that the publication will disseminate good practice in the repair and maintenance of the historic buildings which make such a significant contribution to the character and attractiveness of the town, but also provide guidance to developers building new properties in a listed building setting.
Should you wish to take a look at the leaflet, it is available on the Council’s website. (http://www.cheltenham.gov.uk/downloads/file/3326/regency_precepts_guide).
