Plans are underway to reinstate the historic railings around Imperial Gardens as a joint initiative between Cheltenham Borough Council and the Friends of Imperial Square, Heritage and Conservation (FISHAC).
“Re-introducing the railings would build on the long heritage of the gardens and enhance the Regency heritage which attracts so much tourism and business to Cheltenham,” says Bob Keevil, Chairman of Trustees of FISHAC. “It also complements the reinstatement of the railings alongside Montpellier Gardens and the restoration of Pittville Gates."
The project will cost £500,000, a sum to be raised by FISHAC’s fundraising activities with the funds used for construction by the council.
To learn more about the historic significance of Cheltenham’s ornamental railings, book a place on the walking tour taking place as part of the Heritage Open Days weekend. ‘Montpellier’s Ornamental Ironwork’ starts at the Queen’s Hotel on Sat 14th and Sun 15th September.
