The National Star College commits to bringing an equality of opportunity to every student and staff member regardless of age, disability, gender, religion, race or sexuality.
The college provides a variety of programmes and courses with access for all students. The Creative and Performing Arts courses as the Star College include photography, ceramics, textiles, acting, dance, music, film and animation. The facilities include specially adapted dance and performance studios and theatres as well as a recording studio, radio station and craft rooms. The college hosts annual arts festivals and gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents as part of the Cheltenham Music festival or on stage at the Everyman Theatre.
The Life-skills and Citizenship programme allows students to develop social and environmental skills within the community and continuous practice of academic skills such as communication, literacy, numeracy and IT. National Star College enables students to undertake opportunities such as practicing the learned skills within a working environment.
The Customer Services programme teaches students about working in service organisations. Courses can range from Health and Early Years training, IT and Business skills and Hospitality and Retail Teams. The college works in partnership with a variety of local employers to provide professional experience for the students.
The college also provides Sports and Recreation programmes and Specialist Support Services that can be integrated into the learning day. Partnered with a range of community opportunities, the Sports programme offers coaching and the chance to gain sports leadership awards.
As well as this wide variety of educational opportunities, the National Star College puts emphasis on the importance of socialising. In addition to clubs and activities, there are many trips into town and there are plenty of chances for students to get involved with the ‘Student Parliament’ and ‘Student Union’. On site there is also a bar, a recreation centre and areas for pursuing hobbies and interests.
The college has a vision of a world where people with disabilities are able to see their potential and become actively in control of their lives. The college encourages a residential experience by offering accommodation within the college for development of independence as well as the practicality of direct access to support and other services.
