Voted as the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds, Lower Slaughter is filled with many heritage sites. These include the old school house, two hotels, two farms and most notably The Old Mill. Re-opening its door in 1995, The Old Mill now invites the public to view and learn about the traditional ways of milling flour and also the history behind this scenic town.

Recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086, The Old Mill is now over 900 years old and still standing strong. Situated on the River Eye, the mill was owned by the Wilkins, a family that also ran the Bourton-on-the-Water mill that has now been renovated into the Cotswold Motor Museum. From World War One up to 1958, the flour milling business was run by Joseph “Morris” Wilkins, continuing a legacy spanning four generations of milling at Lower Slaughter. By 1959, the mill was turned partially into a post office and shop by Alfred and Edith Collett. The Collett Bakery moved in 1992 to the Manor Farm site in Upper Slaughter, leaving the mill empty for three years before its triumphant return as a museum.

Whilst visiting The Old Mill, why not visit the award winning gift and craft shop? Not only does the store sell memorabilia and souvenirs of The Old Mill, it also stocks Cotswold Stoneware, local walking guides, fashion accessories and even recycled rugs. Visitors planning to take a walk along the River Eye can also purchase feed for the local duck community.

The River Cafe, run by Lynn and Adam Cox, serves simple and local dishes as well as homemade scones and other delights. There are also plenty of highly recommended restaurants, pubs and accommodation in the local area. For the sweeter tooth, the ice-cream parlour doesn’t disappoint with handmade and organic ice-cream. Flavours include; vanilla, butter crunch, ground coffee, wild strawberry, garden mint chocolate, Jamaican rum & raisin, lemon meringue, pistachio and a brown bread option!
