The Sheffield Eagles and Scotland RL prop forward Mitch Stringer and Derbyshire community coach Kane Krlic, are leading the launch of ‘Derbyshire Junior Eagles’ - a train-on squad for the 13 to 14 age group.
The aim is to provide the youngsters with a player development opportunity, with training and education from the Eagles first team players and club coaches.
Kane, Derbyshire Rugby League community coach, said: “We feel Derbyshire is a real untapped area for Rugby League. The game has grown massively in the area over the last 3 years, but I believe that is just the tip of the iceberg. I have the belief there are many more young players out there wanting to get involved in Rugby League, and this will hopefully provide a great pathway for the youngsters to participate in Rugby League.”
This will run alongside the South Yorkshire Junior Eagles that is currently been ran at Don Valley Stadium.
Mitch Stringer, who also coaches at amateur club Hoyland Vikings, said: “After the massive success of the South Yorkshire Junior Eagles, we felt we wanted to expand and give the young players of Derbyshire the same opportunity. We want to develop every young player that attends the camp and then hopefully signpost them to their local community club (North Derbyshire Chargers and Derby City). While we at Sheffield Eagles can also use it as an opportunity to identify talent, creating a pathway leading onto our scholarship programme.”
“Junior Eagles will be educational and analysis based, so youngsters can learn how we approach and play the game. Some of the lads we get haven’t played the game a lot so we want to show them how to analyse their performance and see how they can improve themselves.”
Junior Eagles starts with a free one day camp at Frederick Gent School, Mansfield Road, South Normanton, Alfreton, Derbyshire DE55 2ER on 21st Feb 2013 starting at 10am and finishing at 2pm.
