Chesterfield needed to win at Hartlepool to keep their hopes of staying in League One alive. The Spireites were unchanged keeping the same team that won 4 nil against Wycombe on Easter Monday. Hartlepool with several injuries had been struggling recently to score goals, winning only one in their last 9 games.
A slip from Collins, the Hartlepool defender nearly let Mendy in, from the kick off. Both sides failing to cause a real threat, passes going astray at the vital momemts. In the 37th minute, Noble moved down the right and crossed in for Liddle to turn around and score from close range. Half time spireites were losing one nil. At Bramall Lane, Leyton Orient were winning by the same scoreline, if these scores stayed the same, Chesterfield would be relegated.
Hartlepool began the stronger, Lee having to twice deny noble with good saves. Sheridan realised that changes needed to be made if Chesterfield were going to get something out of the game and avoid being relegated. On came Whittaker and Boden for Juan and Westcarr. Bowery put a low cross in for Whittaker to score from 10 yards out, putting the Spireites level with 58 minutes, more good news was that Leyton 0rient were losing 2-1.
The subs were definately making an impact, as Chesterfield were looking dangerous. On 68 minutes Bowery headed home, to put Spireites into the lead. Hartlepool seemed shell shocked and were unable to find a equaliser. So at the final whistle with victory secured, the 206 Spireites fans left happily knowing they were safe for at least another week.
Never say die, seems to be the Spireites motto, at least they will go down fighting. Next at Home are Rochdale the losers will be relegated, another game the Spireites need to win and hope at least Leyton Orient or Walsall fail to win.
I am a blogger for the Derbyshire Times living in Chesterfield. I like to write about the Spireites, whom i follow Home and Away. I will be writing on here, about the season ahead, Match previews, Reports...
