There are just 5 days left until the Olympic Torch arrives in the UK, on Friday 18th May 2012.
The Olympic Torch Relay, will take 70 days and begins at Land’s End, Cornwall on the morning of the 19th May. The Olympic Flame will then travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK and in fact over 95% of the population will be within just 10 miles of the Olympic Flame as it makes it's way around the UK.
Chesterfield will be playing host to the torch and it's bearers on Friday 29th June. Local communities and all residents have been invited to join in the celebrations on the day, for what for many will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Cllr John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “To see the Olympic Flame in Chesterfield will be a very special moment in our town’s history. This is absolutely fantastic news for Chesterfield. The Olympic spirit touches thousands of people and, even though many may not have the chance to go to London to experience the Games, this gives us an opportunity to play an important part in the London 2012 Olympics.”
The Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers each of whom will have a story of personal achievement and/or contribution to the local community. The Torchbearers along our route are as follows:
