CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is delighted to present Lisa Ivory's debut solo exhibition with the gallery in Soho, London.
Ivory is recognized for her atmospheric landscape paintings, where Wildmen, women and skeletons cavort and coalesce. In this new series, Ivory anchors an exploration of mortality by depicting the symbolic figure of Death. This motif, often linked to the memento mori tradition, serves as a reminder that death is an unavoidable part of the human experience, urging viewers to reflect on their own mortality and the transient nature of worldly pleasures.
In Ivory's paintings, however, humans are not haunted or overwhelmed by Death. Her portrayal of skeletons being spanked or depicted as a puppet controlled by a female nude, presents a converse view of death’s power over life. This layer of macabre humour offers a satirical commentary on control, manipulation, and fate.
Events take place in distinctive landscapes with an archaic tone that transports viewers to a different era. Ivory's works often evoke the haunting beauty and eerie atmospheres reminiscent of Francisco Goya's darker periods, encapsulating a sense of timelessness and human solitude. Weaving these elements into cohesive and compelling narratives, Ivory’s paintings resonate with beauty and a profound, albeit carnivalesque, existential reflection.
The event will take place at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON, Gramercy Park Studios, 25 Great Pulteney Street, Soho, London W1F 9ND. Available to view Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. For further information please contact direct@charliesmithlondon.com. Follow @CHARLIESMITHIdn
