First4Sight – Poisoning

 

Welcome to First4Sight, a quick insight into how to deal with minor first aid incidents

In this edition, we will be looking at – Dealing with Poisoning 

If the person has any visible blood, vomit or faeces, Put on gloves or any other protective barrier.
 

CLUES TO INDICATE POISONING: 

  • Empty or visible containers/bottles/tablets/drugs
  • Syringes or drug taking equipment
  • Breath smells

SIGNS OF POISONING: 

  • Vomiting or retching
  • Stomach pains
  • Burns or burning sensations
  • Breathing problems or blue lips/finger tips
  • Headaches, confusion or hallucinations 

TREATMENT OF POISONING: 

  • Dilute or wash away the substance
  • Drink sips of water / milk
  • Do not encourage to vomit
  • Treat the area for ‘burns’ 

Dial 999 for an ambulance giving as much information about the poison as possible

If the casualty becomes unconscious; place them in the ‘recovery position’
