Coventry Memorial for Civilians of the Blitz
Another story from the local paper last week was about a planned Memorial to remember civilians who died in the Coventry Blitz on the night of November 14th, 1940.
This will be the first memorial to the universal suffering of ordinary Coventry people on that fateful night nearly 70 years ago.
The plan is for a major sculpture (as significant as the Lady Godiva statue) to be built around the Bullyard area of Coventry city centre as part of the £1billion regeneration.
The idea comes from Councillor Gary Ridley, who feels that neither of the two current Second World War memorials mark the suffering of all ordinary civilians who were living in Coventry during the blitz and they want the people of Coventry to be involved in sharing their thoughts and ideas for how the memorial could look. Then the public will be asked to choose a favourite design.
The Coventry Blitz is a big part of our city’s history. So, get your thinking caps on and try and come up with an absolutely breathtaking memorial that makes a statement, and one that makes us proud to be the city of reconciliation. Ali, thebestofcoventry
