Welcome to First4Sight, a quick insight into how to deal with minor first aid incidents
In this edition, we will be looking at how to recognise and treat heat exhaustion
A casualty suffering from heat exhaustion who is left untreated,
may develop heat stroke and become unconscious.
RECOGNISING HEAT EXHAUSTION:
They may have pale, sweaty skin
They may feel sick and have a loss of appetite
They may say that they “feel cold”, but be hot to the touch
They may have cramps in their stomach, arms or legs
TREATING HEAT EXHAUSTION:
Take them to a cool / shady place
Remove any extra layers of clothing and lay them down
Give them lots of water to drink (to re-hydrate them)
If the casualty becomes unconsciousness; dial 999 and place them in the ’recovery position’
SIGNS & SYMTOMS of HEAT STROKE:
Dizziness and severe headaches - Flushed, dry and hot skin
Confused and restless - Fitting
Strong, heavy pulse – Unconsciousness
