Introducing Marie Winter, owner of Buffets by Design
I’m Marie and I’m the founder of Buffets by Design, a local company providing great honest food for all your catering needs.
What do you love most in life?
The company of friends and family. I love great food, entertaining, working in a creative and friendly environment and hot British summers (!) I also have a huge passion for sport and am looking forward to the Olympics immensely.
Your claim to fame?
Buffets by Design have catered for all types of events throughout Croydon including functions attended by Boris Johnson and David Cameron.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
The usual milk, butter, cheese and a selection of jars as found in most family fridges,. I also make sure I have cubed pancetta, parmesan cheese and a jar of sun dried tomatoes, very useful if I am in a hurry and need to throw together a tasty meal at short notice.
What advice would you give someone who wants to set up their own business?
Do not be afraid to go along to local networking events. These are attended by very knowledgeable friendly people who are willing to share their experiences and give advice when asked.
Who is the most interesting person you have met?
My brother in law Mike, who has lived with the nomadic Touareg tribe in Mali, worked for the United Nations in Nepal, he now lives in Bangkok. He should write a book on his incredible experiences, I would buy it!
There are few catering companies around – what makes you the best?
Listening to what customers want and tailoring our service to meet their requirements. We realise that one size does not fit all, and we are prepared to be flexible enabling our client’s events to be turned into unforgettable memories.
How many jelly beans will fit in a Boeing 777?
Mmmmm, don’t know the answer to this one, I would guess that it is as awful lot and it would take a very long time to get them in there. Not sure Richard Branson would be too happy with a sticky plane.
Will you be applying for the upcoming ‘The Only Way is Croydon’?
NO!!
What is your favourite book?
I absolutely loved ‘The Glass Palace’ by Amitav Ghosh. It is set in Burma in the late 19th century and follows the life of a poor boy that goes on to create an empire in the Burmese teak forest. It is beautifully written by a ‘master storyteller’.
If I assembled 10 of your clients in a room and asked them about you, what would they say?
All would be delighted with the service we have given them. The delicious food would be just as important as the service with a smile which is included for free with any of our orders.

What were you hoping we’d ask you, but didn’t?
Which is our most popular hot dish? The answer would be Moroccan Lamb served with couscous. A recent client even asked for the recipe.
