Fracking is a way of drilling to extract shale gas from deep in the ground. We had never heard of it until permission was given to a company to do exploratory tests in the Deal and Sandwich area.
There is an Early Day Motion, tabled in September, proposing a moratorium on fracking because of the potential dangers it carries for workers, the environment and local residents.
Local environmental group, Deal With It, have researched fracking and are very concerned about it. They recently screened the film Gasland which paints a shocking picture of the effects of this practice.
Others say that we should welcome any possibility of jobs in the area and tolerate any negative effects.
Should we be concerned about the prospect of fracking in and around Deal, Dover and Sandwich?
I am.
A Deal local. What more can I say?
