Carnoustie was the venue for the Seniors Open Golf - great weather, great atmosphere, great golf and a great win for Bernhard Langer.
Yes all 'great' but here's a story where this overused word really means something!
I decided to attend the Open Golf on Friday with the tickets presented to me by Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce.
In and around the Carnoustie Golf Hotel were a number of military personnel in uniform, enjoying the golf and hotel hospitality.
After following a few holes with my Golfing 'hero' Tom Watson I went back to the Hotel and began chatting to the group - Royal Marines from RM Condor, Arbroath. They were all delighted to be there and explained how they came to be at the event ...............
Sgt. "Baz" Barrett met Tom Watson at the Open Golf in St. Andrews through the Help for Heroes campaign. Tom went over to speak with him to ask about his injuries and asked if he could visit 45 Commando Royal Marines, Arbroath.
The Royal Marines hosted Tom for the day and after a tour of the camp Tom abseiled off the Dry Ski slope at Condor. The unit at Condor were delighted that Tom had so much enjoyed his visit and even more so when he gave them 8 hospitality tickets for each of the 4 days at the Carnoustie Open.
Sgt "Baz" Barrett used to be a golfer before his life threatening injuries in Afghanistan, and although currently a wheelchair user and still undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Headley Court he is determined, positive and upbeat and told me he would have no hesitation in doing the same again in the service of his country. I consider it a total honour and privilege to have met Sgt "Baz" and his colleagues -

However, at the the Best of Dundee and Angus we propose to adopt two HEROES who are truly outstanding in all walks of life.
