Does smoking relieve stress?

This month The British Journal of Psychiatry reports on research done on smokers giving up with Smoking Cessation programmes. They looked specifically at the effects of smoking on anxiety. They found that a majorority of those that had given up had less anxiety once they had stopped smoking.

The old excuse of people smoking for relaxation - from the stresses and strains of everyday life -  does not ring true any more. Once people have given up smoking they can have a much more relaxed life.

Certainly they have no more worries about how much it is costing them. They have no more worries about just where they are allowed to smoke. They have no more worries about poisoning themselves or those around them. They do not have to fight against the withdrawal symptoms from their last cigarette. In fact they have gained freedom from these things.
