We went to walk on the beach, look at sea and waves, and breathe the sea air, never even thought about there being a tea shop, they are everywhere, the cliffs and Beachey Head are unique

An interesting place reached by the hop on/hop off open-topped bus from Eastbourne. Nice cafe and lovely coffee! Very windy but refreshing!!

We are members of the National Trust and so parking was free and our Grandson enjoyed fishing in the rock pools when the tide finally started going out. Great to have a cafe and toilets nearby but wasn't very impressed with the hot chocolate. Would certainly go there again.

My husband and I took a day trip out here from London and immensely enjoyed ourselves. I wanted to see the chalky white cliffs and after some research found that this place was better than Dover...THEY WERE RIGHT!

Take the train from Victoria towards Eastbourne (get an actual ticket and don't use your visitor Oyster card), then hop in a taxi at the Eastbourne station and ask to go to Birling Gap National Trust. The taxi was less than £10 one way. You can get a bus from the station on Sundays or certain holidays, but it is really easy to just hop in a taxi as it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get there. VERY EASY to get there this way. Make sure you take a business card from the taxi driver or write down their number so you can call for a pickup later (or you can arrange this ahead of time before leaving the station if you choose). In all, it takes about 2 hours to get here from London on a good day. Not too bad at all. I've been there early in the morning and have also arrived after lunch time. In the summer the day is longer so you will have more time in the afternoon to walk around. Check sunset times to manage yourself wisely. (You can also drive there as well as there is a car park with more than sufficient parking.)

Once at the Birling Gap National Trust area, they have two ares for bathrooms (one inside and one outside), a small cafe (sandwiches, desserts, tea, coffee, etc.), a gift shop, and a small museum. Look up the tide timetable so you can get there at a time when the water won't be high tide....otherwise you won't be able to go down to the beach during certain seasons. Head down to the beach and get some pictures, then take a walk up the hill towards Belle Tout.

You can spend 1 hour here or the whole day. This is the perfect place for a picnic! You can also go on longer hikes from this spot if you so choose, or a short one as well. Either way, hiking shoes or boots are best around here but sneakers can do in a pinch. Definitely bring your sunglasses and a jacket. In the summer time it was still chilly enough for a light jacket or hoodie, but in the spring time it was VERY cold! It gets very windy here so plan your apparel accordingly.

There are many people here so I wouldn't worry about feeling like you are the only one. This is good for families, couples, or traveling solo. Just be careful to stay away from the cliffs and watch small children. The edges of the cliffs are not roped off or marked, so be cautious where you are walking.

I wouldn't miss this if I was traveling in the area or long enough in the London area. It's nice to get away from the city and get some fresh air and time with nature. If you are considering having a hiking and nature holidy, you could spend a whole week in the park area up and down the coast.

Many times we have visited Birling Gap and whatever time of year never disappointed . It is a lovely secluded beach , however does get very busy in the summer , but certainly a place you can truly relax and enjoy

Approximately five years ago because our daughter and her family had moved to Eastbourne ten years before we decided to move here ourselves.
So being a keen cyclist I often find myself over in BG as whatever time of year it is always so inviting.
During the Summer as you would expect it is extremely busy with coaches of visitors from Germany Netherlands. etc but never too busy to get a spot on the beach to relax. The National Trust cafe is also a great place to relax and get something to eat or drink at a reasonable price.
In the Winter there are few visitors but this then enables you to take in the beauty and solitude of the bay. It's also a great time to explore the rock pools when the tide is out.
If you should decide to visit BG then can I ask you to do two things. The first is if you do decide to climb the cliff please keep a fair distance away from the edge as it can be undermined and could collapse if you do go too near the edge.
And the second is to keep your eyes open for anyone you feel is inappropriately dressed as they may be in a distressed state and need help.If you do spot anyone then please contact the local police.
Please don't let either of those facts put you off visiting BG because it is really a place worth seeing.

We met up for a morning of drawing and painting. Good tea coffee and scones. Cafe is always busy which is a good sign. I must admit that the locations we choose to draw and paint must always have good facilities.

This area of South Downs NP is cool! There are plenty of places to park as there is a car park, and you get wonderful photos from almost everywhere! It has a set of stairs leading down to the beach and it's along the South Downs Way. I highly recommend coming here when in the area.

If you are into walking/hiking, this is a must, did the walk from Eastbourne to Birling Gap and back, absolutely breathtaking scenery and quite a good workout, I recommend going the cliff edge route to Beachy Head, there is a fantastic view and a good climb at the end to get to the top of the mountain.......Will definitely do this again....

As always when one stands at the bottom of the cliffs, it is awesome to look back up. It is quite a hike down and the beach is rocky. Low tide is the best time to visit as more of the beach is exposed. There is a very nice restaurant/coffee shop and souvineer shop there too.

Parked at the National Trust car park and walked up the cliff path which is pretty steep. Beautiful cloudless summer's day with an outstanding view. Walk to Bel Tout Lighthouse where you can enjoy coffee/snacks etc.

There are wonderful walks and views from the cliff walks .You can do a long walk along the cliffs in either direction or do a smaller round walk. The beach at low tide is shallow and has shingle beach with spots of sand patches reached from steps. There is a pay and display car park (N.T.members free)with toilets (disabled as well)There is also N.T cafe and shop. Popular spot for tourists and walkers.Beware of the dangerous cliff edge which is unfenced and can fall away.At the top of one cliff is a light house and small shop selling drinks and ices.

I'm glad we started at the Visitors Centre, though we were eager to be out walking on the coastal path. Interesting displays on smuggling, local birds (with buttons to push for sound), and marks on the floor to indicate the dramatic erosion of the cliffs over time. Helpful staff.

You descend approx. 60 steps to get down to the beach which was quite difficult to walk on in places as some areas were covered by large stones but it was well worth the effort. To walk along the base of such a beautiful white cliff was amazing and the views of the Seven Sisters were stunning. There were lots of rock pools to explore.

It was £1 for an hour to park (- we spent that time on the beach) and then got another hour's parking to spend in the lovely National Trust café, shop and visitor centre.
