We were visiting family in Eastbourne and wanted to take our children to see the rock pools and the white cliffs near Beachy Head. Birling Gap is about a 10 minute drive from Eastbourne. We parked at the National Trust car park - cost us £2. A short walk to the Visitors Centre which had a shop where we were able to getting fishing nets at a reasonable price of £2.50 and a bucket - which we forgot to bring! There is also a place to eat there but we didnt try! The children 4 and 7 years were so excited to then climb the stairs down to the pebbled beach and then on to the rocks to look for small sea creatures. We fished for prawns - I think that's what they were, didnt find enough to take home to cook for supper though, so we did put them back at the end of our outing!! There were crabs and lots of limpet shells and even a small fish with a very spikey fin!! Had a great time carefully walking over the rocks, the seaweed made them a bit slippery so had to be careful where you trod. We were lucky that the tide was out so walked quite a way so that we could see the red and white Eastbourne Lighthouse. Had our picnic lunch on the rocks and made our way back after a few hours under the white cliffs. Great place for kids although we had been advised that it would have been to tricky for children, our two loved their adventure and would definitely visit again. It was a sunny day and there were also lots of people walking on the cliff tops as well.

Well worth a visit to get a spectacular view of the White Cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Lovely pebble beach access by steps. Good Car Park and National Trust Cafe

This site was an old tatty pub for years in a place where the full force of the sea has been eroding the cliffs for years. Recent storms and extensive cliff erosion has renewed interest in the area and the National Trust now own the site the old pub has been turned into a visitors centre with a very interesting local history and geology exhibition. It has the usual shop and cafe where you can have a very reasonable snack. My wife was taken by the family for a Champagne Breakfast on Mother's Day. Good Coastal walks over the Seven Sisters and down on the beach. Well worth a visit from the whole family.

The new Centre Museum and Cafe which I think is run by National Trust was an addition since we last visited. However there were less terraced houses than before. We didn't go down to the beach which we are told is nice on a good day and rich in fossils. The Eastbourne to Beachy head Open Top Bus tour stops here on it's loop and you can hop back on after your visit as they come around every half hour.

This is one of the "must see" views on the south coast. The view of the Seven sisters, is excellent, especially at sunset. The beach can be reached by a series of steps. Not for those with poor mobility.
The National Trust have a cafe and visitor centre at the gap. It gives an interesting history of the area. The cafe is large and airy, as you would expect from a National Trust Cafe they have a wide range of cakes. There is a pay car park, but the cost can be returned by spending over £10.00 in the shop.( free for N.T. Members)

Whilst visiting the area of Beachy Head we decided to explore the area. We found Birling Gap. This was an interesting location to find. It has a exhibition of the History of the area, this was fascinating. You can also go to the base of the cliff at fthis location. There is a nice cafe where you get a lovely cream tea.Delicious. the area is being eroded. There are photos in the Exhibition showing the Area as it used to be. My wife and I found it very interesting. Make sure you visit Birling Gap.

Whilst visiting Birling Gap recently I overheard a group of walkers state that the site was " not up to National Trust standards" and was "shoddy"??? Admittedly this is not a Grade 2 listed building, it has no antiques or manicured gardens BUT it is a stunning and ecologically managed site with access to a fantastic beach as well as coastal walks along the Seven Sisters coastal path as well as to Belle Tout and Beachy Head lighthouses. The fact that the soup of the day in the cafe was not displayed seems a paltry complaint but then National Trust members can (sometimes) be picky and over.y critical. My advice would be that if you don't like something then sign up as a volunteer and help to bring about change. Birling Gap remains a unique gem in the National Trust and should be praised and appreciated.

Took the tour bus from Eastbourne, only got off at Birling cap as travelling with a disabled person who uses a wheelchair. Went to the visitor centre and was told a story of bravery and determination of the Eastbourne lifeboat when they rescued shipwrecked sailors from their ship. And a very informative talk on the erosion that is continually taking place along this part of the coast. Get there before it changes yet again and more cottages (four left out of eight) disappear.

We arrived at about midday and the car park was already quite busy with about 6 coaches. This also meant there were a great number of people at the cafe and visitor centre, but they all seemed to depart about 1pm and a tourist lull descended on the place for an hour or so.

The visitor centre was very informative and the staff friendly. They advised us that a pram could be pushed up to the lighthouse, although their were steps to begin with. Indeed it was easier to carry little D and push an empty pram.

Once you had passed the steps the grass was very short and the ground hard. It was easy to push a pram however I would strongly advise you attach the pram to yourself because the wind can gust and the unprotected cliff edge is only 25m away!

The walks are splendid and the 7 sisters are beautiful. There are in fact 8 hills but the visitor centre explains why it is still called the 7 sisters.

All in all Birling Gap is a beautiful place to visit. It was easy enough to push a pram around and the fresh sea air certainly wore him out.

I would certainly recommend people to visit if they enjoy coastal hill walking.

From Birling Gap you get beautifull views on the cliffs from Beachy Head. Also you can go down a staircase here to get on the beach.
Also clean toilets on this location if needed...

You could walk all the way from Eastbourne to Beachy Head to Birling gap but this would be a very challenging task. For an experienced walker it might be fine though (watch the tides!) About this place, the white cliffs that are forming the "Seven sisters" are continuously eroding and collapses are known to have caused great tragedy. So please don't walk or sit too close to the cliffs, oh... And expect naturists sunbathing! As for the views, they are just awe inspiring and if you are a hobby archaeologist (or a real one ;) ) you can find a lot of flint that's been worked around on the shingle beach. It's a trip I'd recommend as you'll never forget the views. So much more to say and tell but do find out for yourself!

This is really a break in the hills that run along the south coast, but the immediate area is steeped in history which is told through placards and photos in a small museum/room ion a building at the location which is owned by the national trust. The views are stunning, although it can be a bit windy. Coastal erosion is evident in the area and it continues unabated at a rapid rate. Worth a visit and make time to visit the building for a coffee or just to read about its history which is well documents and presented.

Iconic views of the South Coast. Just invites you to walk along the cliffs but not easy on the legs! Certainly worth taking to stairs down on to the beach, very dramatic

This is a photographer's dream location. Shades of colour of the sea water are striking against the white chalk cliff sides. Beautiful action shots can be taken as the water crashes against cliff walls and brave folk enjoy their leisure activities on the water.

However, steep steps down to the beach so be careful! You can park at the cliff top and walk to an observation area if you don't feel like a climb.

On sunny afternoons, great to watch surfers etc. Great child friendly café on site, well worth dropping in for a delicious snack in 'New England' style surroundings.

As with all national trust attractions, parking is free for members, but not for non-members.
What you get here for your membership is access to stunning views out to sea, access to pebble beaches, via 4-5 short flights of stairs, walks along the cliff tops, a visitor centre/shop, and a cafe.
There is also a disappearing row of cottages, photos of the original row can be seen inside the visitor centre.
Good for pebble beach walks, cliff top views, picnics, etc
In good weather I could imagine staying for a few hours and enjoying the sunshine and views.

If you are visiting Eastbourne or the surrounding area then this is a must on a sunny day.

Take a walk up behind the Coastguard Cottages ( just a few steps ) and then view the magnificent Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. One of the most iconic views in the U.K. Take a picnic and absorb the beauty. Breath-taking.

Second visit to this beautiful place, although quite a few people were all walking you felt free and watching the sea changing colour as the clouds moved and laying on the grass and spotting rainbows was fab. Fresh air, fab views, perfect.

We had high expectations as we read online it was great but what you should value if you go there is not the view(Beachy head is better for the view) is the road. Walking there was a challenge. Do not walk later. At 5 p.m. they close every shop and we had to beg the ladies there to give us a bottle of water as we were walking for 3 hours and ran out of it. And we had to go to Tiger Inn(which is 30 min at least if you are tired enough) to eat something.

Just one word to say - Beautiful! Go there in the early hours or late afternoon for the best view. Not much to do beside the view though. It can get seriously windy so do mind the gap!

We have been visiting Birling Gap for years. The cliffs are encroaching the National Trust shop & restaurant, and row of houses. I guess we feel we are supporting it, and on a sunny day, a lovely place to sit down with a cuppa!
