This spot is administered by the National Trust. Depending on the tide and weather conditions, walkers can walk along the beach with the amazing chalk Seven Sisters towering above. The coast is continually eroding and in the NT Visitor Centre there are exhibits detailing the timeline of recent erosion. Well worth a visit.

Birling Gap is a small beach at the bottom of chalk cliffs that form part of the South Downs. It affords wonderful views of the Seven Sisters, cliffs that run form here to Cuckmere Haven. This is very nice to walk along anytime of year, and not too demanding. The beach is made of shingle but still offers a good swimming location. Best of all, its great for barbecues that are sheltered by the cliffs behind. Very popular in summer for cooking on the beach. The only disadvantage is high parking fees; this can be avoided by either parking along the nearby access road or leaving your car in the free car park at East Dean. There you will find a great, authentic Sussex pub alongside a vilage green. Nice walks from her to the sea.

This is always a place that is well worth a visit.
As a writer I often visit here for inspiration and to look at the sea either at it's most violent or when it is calm. There is the National Trust cafe which is good for snacks and seems to be ok.
It is a bit over priced in my opinion for what it is.
I am sure if it was better priced you would have a higher foot fall just for the cafe? There is of course a captive audience with walkers and hikers and people who do not know the area.
The atmosphere in the Cafe is nice and has nice sea views in parts.
There is outside seating which is nice in the summer months.
There is always room for improvement and it could be improved here to make it even more visitor friendly than it already is.

Set in just about the most stunning location along the south coast; there is stair access to the beach. The cafe is run by the National Trust and there is the usual high standard of drinks and light snacks on offer. There are tables outside and you can sit in the sun gazing out to sea! It's not cheap! But you're paying for the whole experience and helping to fund the NT and their work. There is a visitor centre where you can learn about the natural history of the South Downs and the chalk cliffs. There's also a great gift shop! A hop on hop off open top bus stops outside every 30 minutes and you can ride back to Eastbourne town. If you are staying in the area Birling Gap is well worth a visit.

The beach at Birling Gap is a great place to visit with the family. The café has a range of decent food and drink, and the visitors centre is helpful and information. We have attended a rock-pooling session with our kids run by the visitors centre that, despite the near-hurricane like conditions, was a lot of fun and interesting. The parking there isn't great but you can usually get a space and there are a lot of stairs to get down to the beach.

However, once you get down to the shingle beach there is plenty of space to explore - especially when the tide is low. The beach can be a lovely setting for an evening picnic in the summer as well as a good place for a bracing walk in the winter.

A place of natural beauty. The beach at low tide is amazing. Geology everywhere. It is possible to walk east for a half hour and see Beachy Head lighthouse. Make sure the tide is not coming in if you do this.

I had family over from Australia and we went for a run up to Beachy Head and Burling Gap.
So windy we could hardly stand up at Beachy Head so went to Burling Gap.
My family were very impressed with the beautiful scenery there even though it was only January it was sunny with blue skies.
We stood and took photos and was laughing at the cold wind which the family just aren't used to this sort of weather.
But were fascinated by the cliff fall and the cottages having fallen over.
There is a pub there for refreshments and plenty of parking space.
So worth a visit for the sheer beauty of the beautiful vista.

It's worth a visit to see how destructive nature can be. The rate of erosion is amazing. The National Trust has a nice visitor centre with a cafe and gift shop there.

Birling Gap affords a natural ingress through the southern downlands to the sea and several splendid walks across several hundred acres of National Trust property. Birling gap itself has free car parks and a the inevitable vistor centre which includes various exhibits, a pleasant café (which is of a good standard) and shop. From here you can climb down some zig-zag tiered steps to the pebble beach below where you can admire the towering white chalk cliffs which are certainly a natural wonder and constantly face erosion by the sea - Beachy Head to the east and the Severn Sisters to the west. The seas are often quite rough here as they pound the shore and it is not advisable to walk too far along the beach as the rising tides may catch you unawares. Birling Gap is also a good starting point for bracing walks up to nearby Belle Toute Lighthouse and Crowlink where you are afforded splendid 360 degree views.

Well worth a visit but can get very busy in the Summer months..

Well worth a visit if you passing by and staying in and round Eastbourne. Also you must see Beachy Head !!

Free Car Parking and a series of stares , lets you walk down to see and of course touch the sea. Best to visit when the sea is rough as the noise of the sea crashing onto the beach is quite something else and very load and dare i say frightening !!!!!!!!

Worth a stop for Tourists

Our first visit for some time - Birling Gap now has a good new visitor centre, with an exhibition of local, natural and geological interest, a café and National Trust shop.

Parking, although payable, is reasonable, and it is worth paying to subsidise the facilities. Walks from here are absolutely stunning, although frequently very windy. Take great care not to go too close to the cliff edges, which are renowned for cliff erosion at any time!

The National Trust have a brilliant exhibition showing the history of Birling Gap showing how the cliffs have eroded over the decades. Also a nice walk up to Belle Toute and Beachy Head lighthouse, the beach is worth walking on to look at where the cliffs have fallen into the sea. Worth paying for parking if your not a member.

This area is now part of the National Trust. It offers stunning views of the famous cliffs, the Seven Sisters. From this point you can walk or hike in both directions across the South Downs National Park or go down on to the rocks for one of the best sites locally for rock pooling. There is a NT café on site (sells amazing soup) with a shop and an excellent exhibition centre offering information on the area past and present. There is also a display of local artists work celebrating the diverse scenery. This area is sadly eroding and evidence can be clearly seen but it has something to offer whether wild and windy or sunny and calm so well worth a visit. Note of caution - check the tide times at the centre before walking too far along the beach!

Pros - Typical December weather on the coastal downs. Superb. Glorious landscape. Fantastic walking. Wild beach.
Cons - too many people wandering about from the car park.

A great day out at this most scenic location overlooking the seven sisters cliffs. The National Trust visitor's Centre is free and recently updated and expanded. Visit before the sea takes it away! !

(Translated by Google) After a long and delightful walk from Eastbourne via Beachy Head and Belle Tout Lighthouse, we were looking for a place where we could give tired legs a rest and refresh ourselves. Soup of the day and tuna-flavored potatoes in mayonnaise we especially liked! You can eat both inside and outside. And in sunny weather this is especially pleasing. There is a souvenir shop, and the most interesting is the museum. It is quite small, rather an exhibition where you can find out how the coastline has changed. Over the course of a century, the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters have undergone significant changes due to erosion.

Parked at Birling Gap (National Trust £2 parking) and walked to Beachy Head. Uphill and slippery in the wet - but well worth the views. Walked back alongside the road - just under 5 miles in all. Nice hot chocolate in the cafe!
