Interesting history of Eastbourne. We especially enjoyed the old films of the area which are shown in the cinema in the basement of this building. Check opening hours before visiting because it's not open every day but once you have your ticket, it's valid for 28 days.

Very interesting exhibition on at the moment called, Eastbourne in sickness and in health. It's all about the history of Eastbourne going back to 1869 and the towns first convalescent Hospital, All Saints. Queen Victoria's daughter, Princes Alice, stayed at Compton Place to recuperate in 1878 and a memorial Hospital was built in her honour; and WW1 soldiers converlesced at Summerdown camp. These are just a few interesting facts in the exibition. There is a film show downstairs in the cinema which shows old local films from 60's and 70's. It took us about an hour just to look at every thing on the groun floor. We plan to go back another time to look at the exibits on the toop floor, which i'm sure will be just as interesting. Admission charges; Adult £3, Child £1and seniors/students £2.50 well worth the money essecially as includes one free re-entry with in 28 days.

So many people walk by this wonderful centre. Full of history and interesting stuff! Just sorry it isn't open more days, but it's probably run by volunteers, so can understand why.

When I paid my £3 I was given a ticket valid for a month which is unusual and struck me as odd as this is only a small museum. There are excellent exhits on the history and growth of Eastbourne as a town and holiday destination. There is a section on the NHS which I thought was given rather too much emphasis. What I did not realize and the reason for the long validity of the ticket is the cinema in the basement which runs a loop of programs about Eastbourne that runs to nearly 3 hours! The 10 minutes I watched was very interesting but I had to make a move.

An interesting, well thought out presentation of the history of Eastbourne. Carefully targeted to those with an interest in the town's history. Perhaps not suitable for small children.

Mu husband and I went into the exhibition at 3.00. and came out at 4.30 - three floors of excellent history about Eastbourne, well presented and the basement floor showing superb old films about the shops and the travel information. The ground floor was full of maps and information about the layout of the town in days gone by and how it evolved. The first floor was jam packed with information beautifully presented about the pier and the tennis and other activities. Do allow yourself at least over an hour to look at everything - a pleasure to visit.

Worth a visit before you have a wander around Eastbourne. It details how the town was planned and developed from 4 hamlets by the landowners, the influence of the coming of the railway; Eastboune an unlikely bombing target in WW2 and the plans for the Devonshire area currently under development.

Been to Eastbourne several times and never been here before, what a gem, good information on the heritage of Eastbourne, very well displayed. The film in the basement was so good and we will certainly visit again.

Seeing this place on TripAdvisor on a visit to town we thought that we should visit - and we're glad we did!
Although the building appears small on entry, it hides 3 floors of information about the town and its history.
This is coupled with drawings, images, artefacts, models and a mini cinema running a series of info films about the area.
A short walk from the main seafront but worth seeking out

It took me until my third visit to Eastbourne to visit the Heritage Centre, but I wish that it had not. It is staffed by kind, helpful and enthusiastic volunteers and houses two main exhibitions - one on the general development of Eastbourne, including the landowners who battled to make their particular mark and another on life past and present (currently with a special section on the Pier, the first pile of which was driven 150 years ago). There is also a small cinema in the basement, which I understand (I ran out of time) shows both documentaries on the history of the town and a selection of films of various dates. On the first floor there is also at the moment a wonderful exhibition of pen, ink and watercolour street elevations of some of the main streets, showing each of them at various times in their history, based on extensive research through existing drawings, photographs, maps and films of Eastbourne over the last 200 years. With a very reasonable charge for entry, including a repeat visit within a month, there is every reason for both residents and visitors to be both entertained and informed about the town and its people.

This is a lovely building and the people who run it are very nice and helpful. I think they are volunteers and are passionate about the history of Eastbourne. They run some great exhibitions and have some nice models on display. There is a quaint staircase to the upper level. The heritage centre tells us that there is more to Eastbourne than just the seaside, ice-cream and lettered rock. (all very nice I know). If you like a bit of history, well told, give this place a visit.

This attraction is very small but there are several interesting films to be watched in the viewing room. It is housed in an unusual building which adds to the attraction. It is situated near Devonshire Park and there is plenty of parking nearby including free on-street parking.
