The pier gives you stunning views of the coastline, espescially on a sunny day. There are some stalls along it which are generally quite touristy. Can be a bit breezy towards the end, but definitely worth it.

Walk the pier or just sit and take in the sea views. This is a great old pier with nick nack shops and a bar on it. It has recently been repaired after a major fire but is a great free attraction.

Eastbourne Pier was originally opened in 1870 during the great Victorian era that saw piers built around the country at many of the sea-side resorts. I remember as a boy you could catch a boat from the end of the pier in Deal and pictures exist of pleasure boats stopping at the pier in Eastbourne. It is a Grade II listed structure.
Alas time, tides and adverse weather have taken their toll of the structure of the pier and its greatest mishap was a serious fire in July 2014 that decimated the large domed pavilion closest to the shore that used to house an amusement arcade including many slot machines.
Repair work has removed all traces of the wrecked pavilion, repaired or replaced some of the iron and steel supports and replaced the wooden planked decking.
In November 2015, the pier’s owners sold the enterprise to local hotelier Sheikh Abid Gulzar.
Currently, there is just a wide empty decked area where the old pavilion previously stood and the new owner is continuing with the renovation of the rest of the fabric of the pier. He has said that a priority is to re-establish the theatre that has not been used for many decades in the pavilion at the end of the pier. He has annoyed some of the locals by closing the fishing that for years local sea anglers had done from the end of the pier and he has been instructed to cease painting all the lions on the pier gold.
The pier currently offers a pleasant walk out over the sea that can be somewhat bracing when the weather is inclement but it affords an excellent view of the grandeur of the remaining Victorian built hotels. There is an elegant tea-room in the mid-section of the pier with some of the largest chandeliers I have ever seen and a bar at the end of the pier. I am not sure if the night club is still running in the evening, possibly not? Gift shops are available selling the usual seaside paraphernalia and possibly the most interesting is a shop selling glass items some of which are actually ‘blown’ on the premises. On the land side is a great Fish & Chip restaurant.
I have seen the pier over many years and it will be interesting to see how it develops with its new ownership however it is great that it has survived given that so many of the piers around the UK have been lost.
