There are many levels of history to this castle, from its Roman foundation, through the Norman invasion to WW2. We were glad of the audio guide to illuminate the largely ruined remains. Having said that, there were times when we found it difficult to marry what we were seeing with what we were hearing & it maybe needs a review.
The English Heritage guide in the shop was very friendly & informative.

Visited with New Zealand branch of our family, including 2 children not yet in their teens. They don't have historic properties like this in NZ so it was of particular interest to them. This English Heritage castle is still in the process of being developed for visitors but there is plenty to hold interest as it currently stands. The gentleman in the shop was particularly informative.

This castle is small, but it’s history’s is large, visited as I’m a cssc card holder which get into English Heritage sites for free. A lot of history apart of its 1066 link.

There is not much left of the castle but the outer walls are still intact so you can get an idea of scale. Inside there are some interesting exhibits with a very extensive history of the castle from its origins.

English heritage run this site which consists of the walls of a very large Roman fort with a castle within it. The site of the Norman invasion in 1066 and lots of history around it. The castle is in ruins but it has some interesting exhibitions. Not as pretty as Bodiam down the road but a large site worth visiting.

We were staying at Hastings for a couple of days and decided to come here after visiting Battle with its ruined castle, visitor centre, shop and tearoom and hearing about the role of Pevensey, which we hadn’t heard about before. We asked fir the audio guide as we found it added so much to the Battle visit and it was worth doing at a Pevensey too. Good displays across the site. Because we had a prearranged meeting in Eastbourne, we didn’t walk the extensive footpath outside the castle but stayed within the perimeter walls. Really interesting to hear about how early it started it’s existence and how it even played a role in WW2. We made time to visit the small but crammed with things to see free Pevensey Museum too, it was useful to contrast the prison there with the dungeon in the Castle, but also to hear about the life led by one rich prisoner who stayed there with her grooms and gowns.

Dating from medieval times interesting to learn the history of the castle and surrounding area. Also fascinating to see how the castle was used during the build up to the d.day landings in world war 2

While on holiday to Hastings we visited Pevensey castle with our English heritage memberships, the weather was great so walking around outside was enjoyable to see everything and enjoy the view from the little platform at the top of the castle. There is a carpark nearby which is £2 a car for the whole day so after the castle you can go for some lunch I would recommend the priory court hotel and tea room, there is a small shop on the castle with a selection of gifts and some lovely jams for sale.

Went here as a kid, was great to revisit, main keep is enclosed and you can visit most of the castle, its a ruin inside but nice to see. Overlooks where William the Conquer first set foot in England before marching to Hastings to meet Harold in Battle!

If visiting from abroad get the English heritage and National trust tour tickets - will save you a mint as its free to get in to all these sites

Superb castle with exhibitions, great views from the ramparts and lots of explanatory panels giving you a sense of what was there. Cold drinks available in the shop and gifts. Huge space both inside and outside the castle so places to sit and picnic or play hide and seek. Parking very close by. Excellent free museum and town jail nearby too,

This is what they call “a hidden gem”! You can wander the outer wall/ruin but worth going in and getting the included audio tour. Pevensey is where William the Conqueror landed on 28th September 1066, a day later he marched his troops to Battle! Unmissable sites for historians and if you are staying in this area do get English heritage membership, then it will be a free day out!

A good way to spend an hour or two. There is a lot of information to read about the history of the time which puts the Norman Conquest into perspective. Good views from the upper levels.

Spent about an hour looking round. Audio guides helpful to learn more. As it’s a lot of grass underfoot make sure you wear decent shoes if it’s wet! Toilets in near by car pays, not on-site. Plenty of pubs and cafes near by for a cuppa afterwards.

A flat walk of just over a mile from the beach. The outside of the castle is free and is a lovely place for a picnic or walk.
Inside the ruins were quiet (not many people) and you are free to wander around. There are also a couple of exhibits and displays documenting the history of the castle.
If you are looking for a peaceful couple of hours this is the perfect experience, if you are looking for more of an interactive trip you may be disappointed.

Dating back to Roman times, this is the largest Roman shore fort in the country. The castle grounds, incorporating the exterior surrounding walls and the fan Inner Bailey is more extensive than I was anticipating. The castle has benefited from extensive restoration works by English Heritage and was a pleasure to visit the finished article. The castle has newly installed information boards, which help enhance your experience of Pevensey Castle.I especially enjoyed the viewing platform, which gives you a nice view of the castle and the surrounding landscape. This was a great photo opportunity as was the Cannon and the Trebuchet ammunition. An audio guide is available, which I didn't take out as I preferred to free roam the castle and it's grounds. There are informative, interactive displays located in the Towers as well. There are no toilets or canteen facilities at this fine, historical attraction and I thought the English Heritage website seemed to suggest that there was food facilities.
Wasn't a problem though as we decided to eat our own food at Pevensey Bay beach, instead.
I got in for free as I have English Heritage membership, entry fee is £6.80,if you don't.The entry fee of £6.80 is an absolute bargain in my opinion and well worth the admission cost.

A really fascinating place with tonnes of history. Plenty of car parking when you arrive. The staff in the ticket office / shop were friendly and helpful. Going around the castle, the audio guide is one of the better ones we have experienced with just the right amount of information to keep you interested but without going over the top.

There is plenty to see and learn about as you walk around and the views are beautiful.

Remains of a huge castle dating back to 293 and with history up to WW2. The current castle was built by William the Conqueror near the site where he landed his invasion army in 1066. Not a huge amount to see inside the castle, but it was worth going in. DuringWW2 machine-gun posts were built into the Roman and medieval walls and can still be seen today. If you look at some of the walls you can still see the remains of red flat Roman bricks.

The ruinous castle with its modest moat in a picturesque field is worth an hour, and has the bonus of a friendly pub (The Royal Oak and Castle) just across the street, where we enjoyed coffee and cider. It’s a pleasant stroll around the outside of the walls, which gives you a sense of scale of early Normal construction and the way they reused Roman materials, and may be enough for most visitors. You can also go down into the dungeon before reaching the entrance booth and gift shop. We enjoyed chatting with the knowledgeable and enthusiastic employee (not sure if he was English Heritage staff or a docent/volunteer), and sampled some of the excellent jams. It was a pleasant stop for a leg-stretch between Hastings and Eastborne—we saw a number of folks walking dogs around the grounds.

We walked around the edge of castle grounds with the dog, we had good weather and throughly enjoyed it as we don’t live far away and often drive past but never stop. Well worth a visit

We purchased English Heritage annual passes as a family so decided to take the kids to Pevensey castle. It was great, the kids loved looking around and listening to the audio going to each place it said next, exploring the castle. We had a picnic in the castle grounds as well. The kids didn’t want to leave we will defiantly be back soon.
