Beautiful castle, with rich history.
Fabulous choice for a nice day out.
When we went it was a beautiful sunny days, the grounds were just as beautiful.

This is only a small attraction as the castle is pretty much ruins now and you can walk around it fairly quickly, but the amount of history it holds is fascinating. I'd recommend just to go even for a small day out to learn something new!

Well you might be too quick to think not much here....however grab an audio guide and it takes you round and points out the historical areas. Very enjoyable

Great place to visit and lots of history. Views are amazing from the top of the castle. Also lots of interesting facts about Pevensey

Loved Pevensey castle, was better than expected. Roman fortress walls are almost complete, virtually an entire circuit that gives a real sense of the might of the empire.

A Medieval castle complete with moat, gatehouse, towers and keep fits snuggly into one corner. There is a small tower to climb but not the extensive wall walks that kids can explore.

Most unexpected and unusual was the WWII refurbishment, gun emplacements in the keep and even in the Roman walls. A strong reminder of just how real the threat of invasion was a few decades ago.

It has it all - Roman, Saxon, Medieval, World War II! This is a castle worth visiting. Our first impression was the size - it is huge! The history is really well presented and easy to follow, though a few more markers might be useful. Well done English Heritage!

Of great interest to anyone interested in history especially the Norman Conquest. We visited Pevensey bay ... the beach where William the Conqueror landed in 1066. Then we explored the castle at Pevensey where William and his army based themselves. There is a lot of incredibly interesting history associated with this castle. We then travelled on to Battle where William's forces fought and conquered the self-appointed Saxon king Harold. English Heritage membership is really useful!

This castle has a lot of history starting with the Romans. It has extensive grounds but the inner bailey has interesting remains to explore. We took the audio guide and this proved very useful to proceed at your own speed. The gentleman who runs the shop proved to be a source of much knowledge about the castle and he was most helpful in amplifying detail about the castle and it's restoration. A brief but very enjoyable and interesting visit.

We visited here with my children aged 8 & 10. As English Heritage members we enjoyed a 'free' couple of hours. Very interesting, educational and informative. Lots of information and the free audio guide added to it.
My children loved the dungeon in particular!!

VISITED - 25th July 2017
It costs £6-90 if a non member of English Heritage.
If coming from Eastbourne catch either bus 55 or 99 which both pass the castle.
The castle is a ruin but is very impressive with a outside wall and a moat.
You are given a free audio guide which is good.
Do be careful when going down to the dungeon - it is full of water and many a visitor gets wet shoes as it is very dark and therefore deceptive. You have been warned.
Parking (Council) is next to the castle and costs £2 all day.
A tea room is next to the castle as is a pub.
Expect to spend one hour here.

Pevensey Castle is steeped in history, and early morning, when there are mists on the Pevensey Levels, you can imagine when the sea nearly surrounded the castle, making it a peninsula. Shame about the moat. It needs attention

I 1st came here years back, as a whipper snapper, so it was nice to return as a full grown adult and we visited on a sunny Sunday and the the place was quiet and perfect. You can walk around the grounds, inside the Roman wall for free but you would be an idiot to miss the inner castle (although it is £16+ for a family of 3). There is an all day car park next door, just 2 quid and the village is well worth exploring. TOP TIP: WHEN YOU BUY YOUR TICKET, THERE IS A CUTE LITTLE SCAM - YOU WILL BE ASKED IF YOU WANT A GUIDE BOOK FOR 3 QUID, GOOD VALUE, SO YOU PAY.... THEN YOU GET OFFERED THE FREE AUDIO GUIDE! CLEVER! It's way better than the boring paper guide!!

Took very young kids and an hour was enough to see everything. The man in reception was very helpful and informative, there was a good audio guide and some great views from the towers. Nice bit of history from the 11th century all the way up to WWII

This is an enormous site once you go through the archway of the castle wall into the first field.

It doesn't take too long to walk along to the castle itself. There is first a flat path but to get to the castle entrance you have to go along a pathway on rougher ground, of the field itself.

You can just walk around the grounds and have a quick look inside the castle without having to pay anything, which is good if you're on a tight budget or have children and can't afford to pay the prices charged, it's a chance for the children to learn a little bit of history and see a fairly well kept castle.

Outside there is a car park right opposite the castle, not sure if this belongs to the pub or not as there are no signs saying it does and there is no charge to park there. If you go further down the little road, with the tea rooms on the right, there is a car park where you do have to pay to park there.

We had our dog with us and it was a very hot day, so we didn't want to stay long as it would have made our dog ill.

So we spent about 15 minutes here.

I took a few photos for you to get an idea of what you can see completely free of charge!

There is a small souvenir shop inside the castle grounds.

You don't get the impression of how large an area this castle covers from the outside. The retaining wall around the castle covers a very large area.We opted for the audio guide and it was very informative, bearing in mind that the castle had been used from Roman times right up to the Second Word War. Not a huge amount to see inside the castle, but worth the visit.

We were a little disappointed in this Castle and found it quite under-whelming. I guess because in the previous two days we had seen some pretty spectacular ones this one left a little to be desired.

Pevensey is administered by English Heritage and there is an entry fee if you are not a member. There is also a charge for parking (including Disabled - not English Hertitage) but at £2.00 for all day, its not over the top. The entrance fee however, is well worth the money, included in the fee is an audio tour, which takes around 45-minutes to complete. The audio tour covers the Roman, Norman, Napoleonic and WW II periods. There are several towers to go in and inside these its nice and cool on a hot day! There is also an exhibition about the castle in one of the towers.

We didn't know what to expect, as there were some mild reviews on TripAdvisor as well as good ones, but we absolutely loved it. There were free audiophiles included in the entrance fee, which we chose not to get. I didn't buy a guidebook until I was leaving, and my friend and I spent a wonderful afternoon wondering around the ruins, first trying to piece the history of the castle together based on the locations and the info signs dotted around the site, and trying to imagine the medieval shoreline below the castle, then seeing if we had been remotely correct by checking the guidebook! It was a beautiful day, and I think the view was wonderful. The castle has been under seige four times and was ready to be reused during the Spanish Armada (one of the cannons from then is still displayed in the inner bailey) and the Second World War. I don't want to ruin it, but we thought their adaptation of the castle by the Department of Works was absolutely brilliant. There's a small exhibition inside, which is useful, and includes archaeological finds. All in all, well worth the visit, much more to see and do than I anticipated. Although a quiet day, we saw many families making full use of the grounds, and it's a good place to bring a dog on a leash.

We knew that Pevensey was a ruin, and our expectations were low. But we were surprised - and thoroughly enjoyed our visit having learned a lot more than we expected. The Roman outer walls were well explained by information boards. Inside the Norman inner castle a very helpful lady explained more and provided us with audio guides (included in the entry cost). These proved a mine of information with clear instructions covering Roman, medieval, Norman and later history, including details of the sieges the fort has suffered and the Second World War uses of the castle. There was more inside the exhibition room (in a room within the castle walls). This castle is well worth a visit as is the town itself.

A fairly well preserved castle, with plenty of the walls and Keep remaining to keep you interested. Along with the infor boards they offer an audio programme to follow the trail. Not advisable for the disabled or infirmed as many of the towers require walking either up or down into them, but you can still walk around the majority of the castle grounds. It was busy with excited children on my visit playing on the grass or being photographed on the cannon etc. A nice afternoon out.

Nice sight (very spacious!) with a Roman outer wall and steep stairs down into a dungeon! , £6 for and adult to enter and £2 all day parking. Two local pubs with excellent gardens and food. Nice day out :)

A very friendly gentleman here who is willing to answer any questions you have. My Grandaughter (7) loves going into the dungeon & up the steps to look over the top.

The grounds are free but there's not much to see. It's just a nice stroll with a pub and tea room outside which are both very good. It does have an area you can pay to get into. The main castle itself. It's a bit pricey for its size but worth doing once. Better if you have a membership card to get in for free though.
