It's worth a visit if your in the area but I would t go out of my way to see it. The village is very small but pretty and it's nice if your driving past but I wouldn't make a day of it.

This was an amazing visit, the castle has an fantastic history. Do not visit the castle without the audio guide. We were here on a sunny summers day which I guess is the best way to see the castle!

We were touring this area, so thought we ought to do the castle. Whilst it is managed by English Heritage, there is a free 'bit' & a pay for entry. Didn't do the latter, despite it being reasonably cheap, as we felt we'd seen enough.

Although this castle is in ruins, the history of the site from the Roman period through the centuries to the present is very interestingly described in the audio guide provided on admission. We were fortunate to visit on a fine day, when the grounds of the castle and the surrounding area could be appreciated. There were particularly good views from the higher level of one of the towers where wooden steps had been erected to allow access. There was, though, a concern about the handrails on the stairs which we found to be rather too wide to handle, and could certainly be a problem for children. Otherwise, a very enjoyable visit and very helpful staff.

A place which breaths history, from Preroman to the Second World War defences. All of recent history is here. Appreciate the place where the Romans and the Normans landed and understand how its place history was shaped by the landscape. The scale is incredible for its age and there is such a broad and interesting span of history.

Visited here on my own, the person who was attending the shop/entry was lovely, really friendly and made me feel welcome.
I did wimp out of going down the wet narrow window steps to the dungeon!
The north tower was closed off due to flooding but nice to know that safety is a priority here.
I took advantage of the free audio tour which meant that I learnt about the castle and its history without just wandering without really knowing what I was looking at and it gave me a real insight into its history.
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here.

We enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon stroll around this castle. Very informative audio guide giving the history of the place from Roman times to WWII. English Heritage, so as members no extra cost to us that day.

I was interested to visit the castle as I love history and had read about Pevensey being possibly one of the first places the Roman fleet landed when Julius Caesar invaded Britain. There are lots of useful sign boards around the castle giving details of its history.
The location is impressive, and a lot of the original fortification can be seen without paying to go into the moated castle. If the entrance fee had been lower, say £3 or £4, I would have paid it to go in. As it was, we could see into the castle well without having to pay, and couldn't see anything exceptional that tempted us to go in.

Having been in Bayeux only a few weeks ago and visited the Bayeux tapestry which shows the Normans landing in Pevensey it was a must-see on our drive from Chichester to Folkestone along the coast road. Small, but impressive. Audio guide a must!! Incredible history, and beautiful scenery.

Lovely place to visit. My husband and I really enjoyed the castle. It's a
all open air so make sure you have your rainproofs with you. Get yourself an audio guide which will help explain the history of site.

Not a huge amount to see, but fascinating to think about the role the castle has played in England's history, and strange to look across the marshes and remember that the castle used to be on the coast. The audio tour is pretty much essential (it's free) and parking is easy (£2 all day, just outside the entrance). It's a nice place to return to every few years.

We have been to Pevensey Castle before, but thought it worth a return trip. The free audio tour is well worth it as it helps bring the site alive.

There is a small museum but otherwise it is just the Roman/Norman ruins to see.

There is a small English Heritage shop but no toilets, although there are some adjacent to the pay and display car park ( note parking is not free for EH members).

There was some restoration work going on when we visited which meant we couldn't visit the North Tower but I suspect it will be complete in a week or two.

With free English Heritage Membership via my Tesco points this was a must see. Interesting and a good audio tour.

Castle is maintained by English Heritage and apart from the rather disinterested lady in the kiosk dishing out headsets and trying to sell an overpriced guide the rest of the site is very interesting having a history from the Romans right through to the Second World War when American troops were stationed here.
It is now about a mile from the sea but was originally built to protect the coast from marauders.
Not a lot of cover on site so not recommended for a rainy day but worth going if dry.

from the road / car park, we wondered whether we would have a short visit here - in the event we stayed for over 2 hours. The castle has been extensively demolished in the past, but there is still enough to engage one's interest and imagination. The audio guide is excellent and encourages one to stand and ponder, absorbing the history. The construction was unusual and its strategic position gave it great influence - until the marshes were drained and the shore became distant.
There are (thankfully) a few benches and (fortunately) we had brought a snack lunch, as there is little on offer in the entrance kiosk. Be prepared to climb up and down, although the N. tower is closed for now as a new staircase is being built.

The castle dates back to before the Romans, there are walks in the grounds and behind the castle (perfect for dog walking) which are free, you only pay for entry into the inner keep. There is a new path up to the castle which allows wheelchair/ pushchair access, although some parts may prove a little hard as it is on an incline.

We enjoyed another English Heritage day out.
A public footpath runs around the outer castle walls and through this area but you have to pay to get into the main castle area. It is all ruins and at present there is work on the North Gate so you can't climb up for the views
The audio tour is always interesting although ther is not as much to see as at battle.
There is a small shop with limited number of items, could be expensive with a young family if they want shields and swords
The public cap park was £2 all day with toilets closeby.
It's about a mile to the sea.
There was one bench in the grounds, not very disabled friendly if you can't stand for a long time. The steps up and down are quite uneven (not unreasonable!) so take care on a wet day. Dungeon was flooded today and some of the grasses areas slippery

Visited here on our way back from a short break in Rottingdean. Very interesting especially using the audio guide. Unfortunately repair work was overrunning and so parts were inaccessible. Recommended

Spent the day with some friends here after walking from Pevensey bay along the river before Crossing the railway line. Our boys love the grounds of the castle sinve there are parts of the old castle wall where children can enjoy playing outdoors really getting their imaginations running wild instead of playing devices ;) if you are a English heritage member you can get 2 adults and 4 children in otherwise you have to pay the standard price. God fun and worth combing with a walk, some pubs close by in Pevensey and west ham as well as a nice new tearoom.

This is lovely to visit and even it's only ruins it's well worth climbing up to the wall to see the magnificent views and taking photos. You can also walk to Westham which is an absolutely beautiful village with slate stone cottages and pubs. Locals very friendly whilst walking always say hello. Also find the old church in Westham

Like all castles of this age work in ongoing but soon it will be back to its best, with all the rain the moat had water in it and the Dungeons were flooded but all will be fine when summer returns, they have a small Museum with items found on site

The outer walls are all that survive the elements and history. Entrance is free, and maintained by English Heritage. A small charge of £6 is payable for access to the inner walls. History and information boards are all around the paths. Good parking is available.
